Camaguey’s historic centre has been well preserved because of the city’s isolation until the early 20th century; the railway line arrived in 1903 and the main road in 1931. Walking through the complex 16th-century labyrinth of winding alleyways, dead ends, forks and squares is the best way to feel the ambience of the city.
Typically the tour will take three to four hours and will include the neatly renovated Plaza de la Carmen with its baroque church and the highly confusing Cinco Esquinas (five corners), which is one of Camaguey’s more complicated junctions. You will also visit the Parque Agramonte, named after Camaguey’s most famous independence hero. There is a proud statue of Agramonte in the centre of the square, which is surrounded by palaces, a Casa de la Trova and four royal palms planted to commemorate four nationalists who were executed by the Spanish here in 1851. The Plaza San Juan de Dios is a peaceful square with 18th-century pastel-coloured buildings.
